American Athletes Secure Spots on 2026 Freeride World Tour

The Freeride World Tour (FWT) has welcomed five new American athletes to its roster for the 2026 season. These skiers and riders earned their positions through strong performances at the final Challenger Series event, which took place at Arapahoe Basin, Colorado. The competition, held on April 16, marked the end of the Region 2 (Americas) qualifying circuit, determining who would advance to the prestigious FWT.

The athletes who secured their spots on the tour represent various disciplines and hail from different parts of the United States. In the Ski Men category, Kelly Hilleke from Glenwood Springs, Colorado, and Joey Leonardo from Edwards, Colorado, showcased their skills. Wynter McBride from Ogden, Utah, qualified in the Ski Women division. For Snowboard Men, Shayne Blue Sandblom from Lake Tahoe, California, and Warren Doyle from Bozeman, Montana, proved their worth on the slopes.

The Arapahoe Basin event presented participants with a true test of their abilities. The East Wall, known for its technical terrain and unpredictable snow conditions, challenged competitors to navigate steep chutes and exposed faces. This demanding environment highlighted the athletes' skills and adaptability, key traits for success in the Freeride World Tour.

Looking ahead, the FWT has announced its return to the United States with a planned stop in Haines, Alaska, in March 2026. This marks the tour's first event on U.S. soil since 2017, adding an extra layer of anticipation for the newly qualified American athletes.

The sport of freeride continues to gain recognition on the global stage. Discussions are ongoing about potentially including it in the 2030 Winter Olympics, while the inaugural FIS Freeride World Championships are set for February 2026. These developments underscore the growing international presence of freeriding.

Arapahoe Basin, the host of this crucial Challenger event, is a ski resort known for its challenging terrain and long season. Located in the Colorado Rockies, it offers a variety of runs that cater to different skill levels, making it an ideal venue for high-stakes competitions like the FWT Challenger Series.
