Japan's Summer Ski Resort Opens with Massive Snowpack

Gassan ski resort in Japan has started its 2025 season with an extraordinary 950cm snow depth. This summer-only resort, located in Yamagata Prefecture, opened on April 11, offering skiers and riders a rare chance to enjoy snow sports during the warmer months. The resort's unique operating schedule, running from April to July, is due to the heavy snowfall that blocks access during winter.

The record-breaking snow depth at Gassan is significantly above average for this time of year and currently stands as the deepest snowpack worldwide. Despite some melting, the snow depth remained at 890cm as of May 3. The resort's location on Mount Ubagatake, reaching an elevation of 1,984 metres, contributes to its impressive snow accumulation.

Gassan's ski area covers about 2 kilometres, featuring four beginner and two advanced runs. The resort's infrastructure includes a 1-kilometre double chairlift and two t-bar surface lifts. Unlike many Japanese ski resorts, Gassan's terrain is mostly open and treeless, making it popular among backcountry skiers and ski tourers.

The 2025 season at Gassan is scheduled to run until July 5, depending on snow conditions. This timeline is consistent with previous years, including the 2024 season which operated from April 12 to July 5. Daily lift operations run from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with full-day passes priced at ¥5,800 and half-day passes at ¥4,500.

Gassan ski resort's unique summer skiing opportunity attracts both local and international visitors. As one of only six summer-only ski resorts globally, it offers a distinctive experience for those looking to extend their ski season or enjoy snow sports during Japan's warmer months. The resort's popularity, especially on weekends and holidays, reflects the growing interest in off-season skiing opportunities.
