Whoosh Proposes Urban Supergondola Network for Queenstown
Whoosh, a New Zealand-based transportation company, has unveiled its proposal for an innovative urban supergondola system in Queenstown. The company's CEO, Dr Chris Allington, presented the plans during the Electrify Queenstown event, emphasising the importance of community feedback in shaping the network. The proposed system aims to connect various locations in Queenstown using self-driving cabins that travel on an elevated cable network, offering a unique solution to the area's transportation needs.
The Whoosh system operates similarly to a ride-hailing service, with users booking trips through a mobile app. The elevated network allows the cabins to bypass traffic and other obstacles, providing consistent, uninterrupted journeys. As a fully electric and driverless system, Whoosh aligns well with Queenstown's goals for electrification and sustainable transportation.
While the broader plans for the Queenstown network are still in the proposal stage, the first section at Remarkables Park has been confirmed. Construction of this initial phase is set to begin in 2025, jointly funded by Remarkables Park Limited (RPL) and Whoosh. Alastair Porter, Executive Chair and CEO of RPL, expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its potential to demonstrate world-first transportation technology.
The proposed Queenstown network includes a centrally located hub at Remarkables Park, which aims to connect increasingly congested areas to the south, east, north, and west. The plan also envisions a 'Frankton Connector' that could include the airport and a potential year-round traditional gondola to The Remarkables for winter and summer activities.
While Whoosh has garnered international interest, with confirmed projects in the United States, the company has prioritised debuting its technology in New Zealand. Following the presentation at Electrify Queenstown, details of the planned phases for the Whoosh network were made available to the public. Residents are invited to submit feedback and suggestions during a two-month comment period, allowing the community to play a role in shaping this innovative transportation solution for Queenstown.
