Coronet Peak has opened for the 2026 ski season on 29 May - the first major resort in the Southern Hemisphere to come online this year.

The Queenstown ski area is running its early-season format under the "Early Winter: Winter Made Early" programme, with operations powered by the resort's Snow Factory snowmaking technology. The system produces snow in marginal temperatures, allowing the resort to build a skiable base before natural snowfall establishes itself across the Southern Alps.

The early opening runs from 29 May to 12 June in a limited daily format - 10am to 3pm - focused on beginner-friendly terrain on the lower slopes. A dedicated snow zone is supported by Magic Carpet conveyor lifts and a sledding lane. From 13 June, Coronet Peak is scheduled to transition into full mountain operations with normal lift hours of 9am to 4pm.

What's on Offer in Early Season

The early-season setup is built around first-timers, families, and skiers and snowboarders shaking off the rust from last season. Available from the opening date:

  • Ski and snowboard lessons for beginners and private students
  • Full equipment rental
  • Sled hire
  • Sightseeing rides on the Peak Gondola
  • Mountain café

Access from Queenstown is by ski bus or private transport. The terrain scope is limited, but for anyone wanting to get turns in before the main season window opens, the infrastructure is there.

The Snow Factory Advantage

Coronet Peak's Snow Factory is the enabling technology behind this timing. Unlike conventional snowmaking systems, it operates effectively in temperatures where standard snow guns struggle, giving the resort meaningful flexibility at either end of the season. The early May-to-June window has historically been marginal for New Zealand ski operations - this infrastructure shifts that calculation.

(Hanmer Springs did record a brief opening in April following an early snowfall event, but closed again shortly after. Coronet Peak's 29 May opening marks the start of the sustained 2026 season.)

Context for the Season Ahead

Full mountain operations at Coronet Peak are scheduled from 13 June. The broader New Zealand ski season - across Queenstown, Wanaka, and the Canterbury fields - typically ramps through June with the main season window running July through September.

For anyone planning a New Zealand ski trip this winter, Coronet Peak is worth monitoring through June as conditions build toward peak season.
