New Zealand Ski Resorts Receive First Snow of the Season

As autumn progresses in New Zealand, ski resorts are getting a taste of the winter to come. Several popular ski areas have reported their first snowfall of the season, despite being months away from their official opening dates. This early snow is generating excitement among skiers and riders looking forward to the upcoming winter season.

Coronet Peak, a well-known ski resort, has seen a light dusting of snow across its slopes, with more substantial accumulation near the summit of the Coronet Express lift. While the snowfall is modest, it's a promising sign for the resort, which is scheduled to open on 14 June.

Cardrona and Treble Cone have also experienced similar conditions. Cardrona's snow report indicates about 10cm of snow over the past week. At Treble Cone, while the base area remains snow-free, higher elevations have received noticeable accumulation. Treble Cone recorded its first snowfall earlier this week, marking the start of the pre-season build-up.

Treble Cone post about fresh snowfall

These early snow events, occurring in mid-April, are setting the stage for the upcoming ski season in New Zealand. Cardrona is set to open on 15 June, followed by Coronet Peak on 14 June, and Treble Cone on 27 June.

While the current snowfall is light and unlikely to last until opening day, it serves as a reminder that winter is approaching. For New Zealand's ski resorts, this early taste of winter is a positive indicator as they prepare for the 2025 ski season. As temperatures continue to drop over the coming weeks, more substantial snowfall is expected, helping to build a base for the season ahead.
