TL;DR
Mt Rose is going for the first-in-Tahoe title, with the Lakeview Express due to spin at 9 a.m. on Friday, November 6. One main lift, three runs and plenty of snowmaking, sitting on the highest base elevation in the region at 8,260 ft. Here is what is open, what is not (sorry, tubing fans), and how the early North American openings are stacking up.
Mt Rose wants to be the first resort in the Tahoe region to open this season, and it has picked Friday, November 6 to try.
Mt Rose Ski Tahoe in Nevada, about 25 minutes from Reno, says early snowfall and cold temperatures have let snowmaking get under way. The Lakeview Express chairlift is scheduled to start turning at 9 a.m. California’s Mammoth Mountain is a day ahead of that, opening on Thursday, November 5, so Mt Rose’s claim is to the Tahoe region rather than the whole West Coast.
What is open on opening day
The Lakeview Express will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., serving intermediate terrain on the Main Lodge side of the mountain. The planned open runs are Kit Carson Traverse, Kit Carson Bowl and Ponderosa, with more terrain possible as snowmaking continues. Beginner skiers are limited to the Show-Off area near the Main Lodge, served by the Magic Conveyor surface lift, which is also expected to run.
One chairlift and three runs is a short list, and the resort is upfront about it, cautioning visitors to expect early-season conditions and active snowmaking.

Services and what is not open
Lodge services start at 8 a.m., and all parking is at the Main Lodge. The Lodgepole Cafe, Higher Grounds Coffee Bar and Timbers will be open, along with equipment rentals, the tuning centre, and ski and snowboard lessons. Lift tickets are on sale online and 2026-27 season passes are still available.
The Wildslide Tahoe snow tubing park will not open on November 6. Its planned start is Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 26.

Where the North American season stands
Mt Rose is arriving into a season that is already running. Arapahoe Basin and Keystone in Colorado opened in late October, followed by Lake Louise in Alberta on November 1. Wolf Creek, Colorado, opened on October 31 but closed after a single day because of a mandatory evacuation order amid severe flooding in Archuleta County.
Marketing director Mike Pierce said recent snow, the resort’s snowmaking effort and more snow in the extended forecast have conditions ready for the first turns of the season.
About Mt Rose
Mt Rose says it has the highest base area elevation in Tahoe at 8,260 ft (2,518 m) and 1,200 acres (486 ha) of skiable terrain. Its steepest terrain is in the Chutes, where pitches reach 55 degrees. The resort typically operates from early November until almost May, which is one of the longer seasons in the Lake Tahoe region.
